Shadow of the Tomb Raider review (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

Review: Shadow of the Tomb Raider

We all know the old Tomb Raider games used to be not a lot more than an adventure-shooter with some eye candy for all the boys to look at. All of this has changed, with the new Tomb Raider movie, but also with the new Tomb Raider games. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the third and final installment of this new gaming franchise surrounding Lara Croft. Does the game hold up? I’ve got the answer.

Graphics by Crystal Dynamics

Lara Croft has always been known for looking good, and she still does, but now in a less obvious way. Developers Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal are getting really good at creating Tomb Raider Games - the graphics simply look stunning. The visuals really give you the feeling an adventure game should give you: you actually feel like you’re there. It shows you a new world that you really want to explore.

Story of the new Lara Croft

You know the drill, Lara goes off on a little treasure hunt, she accidentally finds some ancient (and magic) Mexican cutlery and starts the beginning of the end of the world. Talk about having a bad start of your day. She goes to Peru to find something ancient... and I will stop spoiling here. You will get what you expect. Including English accents that are questionable voice-over work.

Survival & stealth gameplay

I won’t tell you how, but Lara Croft will find herself having to survive on an exotic island all by herself, again. This means that you will fight off wild animals and other treasure hunters (at least that’s what I think they are). Fighting and surviving means you will die a lot - and I mean a lot in this game. Life is not easy for Lara, that’s for sure. Especially when you’re up against a jaguar, and that’s quite a challenge, obviously. Jaguars are not easy to kill, you know.

What’s new in Shadow of the Tomb Raider?

A new tactic and gameplay element Lara can really use in Shadow of the Tomb Raider is stealth. You can camouflage yourself in mud and not be seen. Sneaking around might not be the fastest way to finish this game, but it’s definitely the safest. Something else that has been expanded and improved is the underwater gameplay. Normally, being underwater isn’t the most fun part of the game and it still isn’t here, but it’s not annoying either. Plus, the underwater visuals really shine here. Look at all the fish!

Verdict of Mobiletopup

It’s another great adventure for Lara and a big step for the Tomb Raider franchise. Another great game that gives you pretty much what you expect. Which some might take as a bad thing, I will take as a good (even though the game doesn’t give you anything really new). I’m an optimistic, glass-half-full kinda guy, you know. Gameplay improved, graphics look even better and you can really tell the game is made by passionate people. We’re looking forward to Lara’s future in gaming.
